Presenter Michael Portillo travels the railways throughout England using George Bradshaw's maps to compare 1840s-era Britain to modern-day Britain. Starting in the city of dreaming spires, Oxford, where in 1921, women were awarded degrees for the first time, Michael then strikes out to explore the Britain of his youth and the new beginnings for Britain after WWII. He also ventures deep underground onto London's newest railway: the Elizabeth Line.
